Project Coordinator Report:

O      The Comment forms provided at the Bear Creek Watershed Assessment public meeting were collected. Some concerns were discussed and will be placed in the appendix of the assessment.

  • Open range data that is available at the Department of Public Works is data that the members would like to see in the appendix.

Watershed Coordinator Report:
The watershed coordinator has been busy submitting grants and writing reports.

      Potential Projects and Funding:
The WSRCD is expecting to receive funding in February for two projects in the Bear Creek watershed: the Shasta Forest Village fuelbreak maintenance and the Shingletown community Fire Safe program.

A water gauging station for Bear Creek has been an idea of the residents and WSRCD members, so the watershed coordinator is currently contacting the USGS representative to get assistance in writing a grant that would fund a water gauging station in the Bear Creek Watershed.

  • The WSRCD produced their January Watersheds and You newsletter. The newsletter can be viewed on the WSRCD web site (www.westernshastarcd.org) or by contacting the Watershed Coordinator.

Marketing the Watershed Group:

  • BCWG web page
    • The BCWG web page is slowly being updated.  The watershed coordinator is currently gathering data to be posted on the web page.
    • The access statistics for www.bearcreekwatershed.com will be updated for the next meeting. Data collection from the past 4 months is in progress.
  • Bear Creek Watershed Group apparel
    • T-shirt sales are slow.  Members from the group plan on selling them at the upcoming Volcano Days. The t-shirts are available for $10 each or any donation larger then the specified amount.

New Business:

  • World Water Monitoring Day – Eda Eggeman (DFG) presented the data collected by the BCWG on October 13th for the 2005 World Water Monitoring Day.  The BCWG now has four years of water quality data on Bear Creek.  The water temperature has decreased from 2004. Data collected include: time, air temperature, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, chlorine and alkalinity. Data tables along with Vital Signs: the Five Basic Water Quality Parameters are available by contacting the watershed coordinator.
  • Redd Survey

After months of planning and many changed dates due to weather or participant conflicts, the BCWG conducted their annual redd survey December 16th. The results were less than expected with 5 redds, 0 salmon and 1 carcass found.  The understanding is that the majority of anadromous fish have recently passed with the early November rains. Dave Dubose, a landowner off of Parkville Road, counted 10 salmon and 1 carcass on November 10th and 2 carcasses on the 15th. Reporters from the Record Searchlight attended and participated in the redd survey documenting all aspects that are included in the Bear Creek redd survey. The article is available at redding.com or at the WSRCD office. A special thanks to Dave Dubose for letting the group use his house as base camp and supplying a wonderful chili lunch.  We would also like to thank Tricia Parker and Brenda Olson (USFWS) for taking on the duty of completing the reports for the survey and supplying waders for the group and Eda Eggeman for the waders she donated for the members to use. The redd survey information is being compiled and will be available at the February BCWG meeting.

  • Group members have contacted the owners of the Shingletown Store and were able to designate a place for the BCWG Information Box that will display our current activities and other information for Bear Creek watershed residents to read. Roland Weidenkeller offered to construct the information box.

Old Business:

  • Organizational Agreement for the Bear Creek Watershed Group – The draft agreement is going through one more updating and will be voted in by the group during the February meeting. After the organizational agreement is voted into place, officer positions for President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer will need to be filled.
